my bet: W signed off on everything

It's obvious when you think about it.

W knew. W thought it was cool. W likes to put on his "shit kicking" boots and run with the big boys.

My best guess it that Dick Cheney, obstinate, nefarious evil genius that he is...got W to sign off on everything. You could call it a political insurance policy. Or just mentor appreciation. Either way, it's hard not to think that Bush, the "tough guy high stakes leader" who took us to war in Iraq and torture in Guantanamo, wouldn't have bought into the image of himself that Cheney so strategically sold him.

Iraq? It was Bush who went to Rumsfeld to draw up a plan in late 2001.

Guantanamo Torture and Abu Ghraib? It was Bush who was told only he had the authority to authorize it.

Chalabi? Sitting next to Laura at the SOTU address.

Plame? How much you want to bet Bush knew and approved? You can hear him gunning for Wilson, can't you?

Dick Cheney, as reported here previously, is cast as this unambitious wise man not interested in "covering his own ass." My take is that's because Dick Cheney doesn't have to: he's got W tied around his little finger. You mess with Dick, W goes down too....because W trusted Dick enough to co-sign the loan. It's a partnership.

W may not trust Cheney any longer. But there may not be much he can do about it...and keep his job.

And that is the crux of the matter.

Cheney took out that insurance policy long ago.
