the California Five

  • CA-11, Richard Pombo
  • CA-26, David Dreier
  • CA-50, Vacant (formely Duke Cunningham)
  • CA-24, Elton Gallegly
  • CA-45, Mary Bono

  • These are the five vulnerable GOP districts in California....districts whose voters are most open to a Democratic message but are now represented by Republicans.

Pombo, Dreier, Gallegly and Bono are all cogs in the machine that's brought Californians the corrupt mess in Washington exemplified by Cunningham and DeLay. You can see by their voting records on Progressive Punch that there is virtually NO DIFFERENCE between them. With the GOP, it's a rubber stamp congress. When they say they're independent...we have to say BS.

We need five credible candidates, five well-funded campaigns, five grass roots fueled efforts...and we need to roll up our sleeves and use the blogosphere to make it known that with the GOP voting in lock step for two decades:...they're all tied to Tom DeLay.

Great analysis! By the stats, Dreier is certainly the most vulnerable because a no-name, unfunded candidate came within a couple of percentage points of beating him last time-- the only California incumbant to come close to defeat. But this year is shaping up somewhat differently, and although I agree that your 5 picks are all vulnerable and should be targeted, I also feel that voters don't have to wait for the Feds to take action before removing John Doolittle, Duncan Hunter, Jerry Lewis and Darrell Issa from their seats. These, along with Pombo, are among the most corrupt individuals to ever plague American politics. It is only a matter of time before these guys will be residing in prisons. I hope the voters in their respective districts do the right thing and remove them in November. I posted a long analysis of these races on

John Doolittle is next in line behind Bob Ney to be subpoenaed off the island. Dolittle's district is Republican to the core, but Doolittle is in deep with Abramoff and DeLay and I think there is a building sense of anger in the district directed at Doolittle. I think that there is a chance for a Democrat or at least a moderate Republican (if such a creature exists anymore).
